That’s a big part of its value, and also why it gets misused. Here are ten mistakes we see most often, and how to avoid them.

1. Treating DiSC as a complete personality profile

DiSC describes behavioural tendencies: how people prefer to act and communicate. It doesn’t measure values, beliefs, intelligence or skills. Use it for what it does well, and add other tools when you need a fuller picture.

2. Assuming all DISC tools are the same

Many tools use the DISC letters, and they differ a lot in research, method and accuracy. Everything DiSC is published by Wiley, validated through ongoing research, and uses adaptive testing that asks extra questions when answers are inconsistent.

3. Using DiSC to decide who to hire or promote

DiSC doesn’t predict whether someone will succeed in a role. Performance depends on skills, experience, motivation and many other factors. For selection, use a tool designed and validated for it, such as ProfileXT.

4. Assuming people with the same style behave the same

Two people with the same style can work very differently. Experience, skills and the situation all shape behaviour. Treat the style as a starting point for conversation, not a prediction.

5. Using DiSC as a label or an excuse

“I’m a D, that’s just how I am” misses the point. DiSC shows people what comes naturally so they can choose to adapt when a situation needs something else.

6. Worrying that people can game the results

People can try, but there’s little reason to in a development setting. Everything DiSC’s adaptive testing also picks up inconsistent answers and asks follow-up questions.

7. Expecting the assessment to take a long time

The Everything DiSC assessment takes about 15 to 20 minutes, and a full Catalyst assessment takes around 20 minutes. It’s a small investment for a profile people can use for years.

8. Worrying that the assessment is discriminatory

DiSC looks only at behavioural preferences and doesn’t ask about age, gender or ethnicity. Wiley tests its assessments across different groups and cultures.

9. Thinking results never change, or change all the time

Core style tends to stay fairly stable. Big life events or a very different job can shift how someone answers, so a retake can make sense after major changes. Usually, going back to the existing profile is the better choice.

10. Doing one workshop and stopping there

The value of DiSC grows when people keep using the language. Plan how you’ll keep DiSC alive after the session: team discussions, Comparison Reports and short follow-ups.

DiSC® is easy to learn and easy to use.
