DiSC facilitator training: how to run DiSC sessions with confidence

A good DiSC facilitator turns a 20-page report into a conversation that changes how a team works. This guide covers what the role involves, how a session flows, the tools you use, and how to get certified to facilitate DiSC yourself.

Explain the circle, priorities and research well enough to answer hard questions.

How a DiSC session flows

BeforeTwo weeks out

  • Agree the goal with the manager or sponsor
  • Send assessment invitations, 15 to 20 minutes each
  • Check completion and read the facilitator report
  • Plan two or three activities around the team map

DuringHalf-day or full day

  • Open with why the team is here and what stays confidential
  • Let each person explore their own style first
  • Move to other styles with an activity, not a lecture
  • Close with one agreement the team will try

AfterFour to eight weeks

  • Share comparison reports or Catalyst™ tips for key relationships
  • Check in with the manager on the agreements
  • Run a short follow-up session
  • Plan the next step, for example management or conflict

Facilitator tip

Use the circle, not just the letter

Six facilitator tips from experienced DiSC trainers

  1. Start with yourselfBefore the session, read your own report aloud. If you can talk about your style without defending it, the group will follow.
  2. Never type people in publicLet people share their style when they’re ready. Labelling someone in front of the team undoes the trust the session needs.
  3. Use the circle, not just the letterA dot near the edge and a dot near the centre are different people. The circle shows that, and it prevents ‘you’re just a D’ talk.
  4. Turn frustrations into dataWhen someone says ‘he never listens’, ask what that person’s style needs. The complaint becomes a pattern the team can work with.
  5. Keep activities shortTwenty minutes of an activity teaches more than an hour of slides. Plan for movement and conversation every half hour.
  6. End with one agreementLeave with one change the team will try, not a list. Check it four weeks later.

About facilitating DiSC

What is a DiSC facilitator?

A DiSC facilitator leads sessions where people explore their Everything DiSC® profiles together. The role is to help people understand their own style, read others and agree how to work better as a team.

How do I become a DiSC facilitator?

Take DiSC® certification. IPB Partners’ programme is about ten hours online, taught by certified trainers, and prepares you to run sessions and interpret profiles in depth.

Do I need a facilitator guide or kit?

Certification includes materials for your first sessions. If you run a specific profile often, a facilitation kit gives you Wiley’s complete programme with slides, video and handouts.

How long is a DiSC workshop?

Most run as a half-day or a full day. A short follow-up session four to eight weeks later helps the changes last.

Can I facilitate DiSC with my own clients?

Yes. Certification gives you a licence to use DiSC with your own teams or clients, and it does not expire.
